To develop long and lasting friendships within the firm, and to grow in knowledge and experiences together, MahWengKwai & Associates first launched its Great Place to Work (GPW) programme in 2010.

The GPW programme is a firm-wide initiative where all lawyers and staff are allocated a budget per person per annum to plan social activities for the Firm. While it is recommended that there should be at least 1 activity per quarter, there are no limits to how often the members of the Firm can get together.

In past years, we enjoyed enchanting musical performances, channeled our inner Malaysian Idol at karaoke sessions, and got swept away by adrenalin-inducing Hollywood summer blockbusters.

2013 was a year of firsts for a number of sporty and adventurous events the Firm’s staff organised and coordinated to great success. Here’s a look back on what transpired over the year:

Archery in March 2013

Team MWKA gathered at the archery range on a Friday evening in Sunway Pyramid to learn the basics of handling a bow and arrow, and thereafter, to compete in a shoot-off between three groups. Although many were first timers, and no one was as adept at hitting the bull’s-eye as Legolas Greenleaf, nonetheless, the competition to score the most points was healthy but fierce. The winning team came away with a sense of satisfaction, and bragging rights until the next shooting challenge.

Laser Tag Battle in April 2013

This second quarter GPW event had MWKA members engaging in a classic game of hide-and-seek and tag with a high tech twist. We strapped on a vest, stepped into the darkened labyrinth, and became completely immersed in a another world – a world where teammates emerged from fog-filled passageways, and a frantic energy pervaded our every fiber! Everyone was exhilarated and breathless dodging lasers, scouring for the perfect ambush spot, and strategising with teammates to compete for high scores and glory in the futuristic blacked-out arena.

Ice Skating in August 2013

The month of August saw the MWKA staffers occupied with elegant gliding and twirling on the ice rink at the Royale Bintang in Mutiara Damansara. Properly equipped with sweaters and jumpers, warm gloves, and shiny skates, the team took to the ice in enthusiastic glee.

Movie Night – “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” in December 2013

A night viewing of the second installment of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit capped our GPW programme for the year. Peter Jackson’s adaptation of this classic work of literature in a three-part silver screen extravaganza of gripping action, expansive story-telling, and panoramic landscapes, captivated our imagination as we journeyed once more into the fantastic world of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.

Workplace friendships are always worth cultivating. We spend most of our life at work, and anything that makes that time more pleasurable is precious. MWKA’s GPW programme aims to combine fun and leisure with team-building and the fostering of improved and open communication amongst one another. It is a welcome break from the daily work-related pressures, and helps fellow colleagues interact, bond, and get to know each other better.

The members of MWKA look forward to another exhilarating year filled with new challenges, experiences, and opportunities to forge closer ties with one another.
